How To Make a Flawless Voiceover
by Saja Chodosh

Whether you’re recording in the mountains of Utah or on a West Coast beach, producing the perfect voiceover is not an easy task. A successful voiceover takes time, dedication, and a positive spirit. Other than obvious tips like drinking honey with tea before recording, there are several steps that help create the perfect voiceover.

The Right Tools

First off, make sure you have the right equipment, including recording and video production editing software. Options may vary based on your video production company’s budget. Editing is key to producing an ideal voiceover or video. You need to use technology to create the best combination of all takes with no abrupt stops, choppy transitions or unnatural volume changes.

The Right Voice

The good news is that the "perfect voice" for a voiceover has expanded exponentially in the past year for video recording companies in Utah and around the world. A deep and slow voice that perfectly enunciates each syllable has become a thing of the past. Nowadays, the most important thing is to sound natural and comfortable. Make sure you work with the scriptwriter to make the script sound natural for your style.

It may be helpful to follow other voiceover examples, but focus on speaking in the voice most natural to you. In addition, pay close attention to enunciation. Test recordings are key in this. You will notice words you slur or phrases that become indistinct in recordings. Even though you want to sound natural, you may also have to slightly amplify your vocal inflections to improve enunciation during the actual production.

The Right Attitude

Surprisingly, even though listeners can’t see your body, body position matters almost as much as it does on video. Whether recording in Utah or elsewhere, it is most conducive to stand during production because the voice sounds more authoritative and animated. It also opens up an individual’s breathing and makes enunciation more clear.

And of course, always ask the client if you have any questions about proper pronunciations or technical terms. You want to understand what you are talking about so you don’t sound like a robot. However, don’t be afraid of messing up! The perfect voiceover frequently requires many imperfect takes.
